United Neighbors Inc.

The agency — initially called the Central and Western Neighborhood Development Corp. — soon moved out of Dr. Johnson’s home and into a church on 12th Street. About that time, the group got permission to host picnics and other small events in a nearby vacant lot.
Then it was time to grow again, and the agency moved into a house at 618 W. 18th St., where it remained for 20 years.
In 1980, the nonprofit organization was renamed United Neighbors Inc., and by the mid-80s it had added several youth programs — including an award-winning drama troupe for teens, summer parks activities and the Clean Team, which was comprised of young people who cleaned up yards in the area.
Then it added housing rehabilitation and down-payment assistance programs for new homebuyers, with a goal of helping to revitalize older Davenport neighborhoods.
In the mid-1990s, United Neighbors undertook a capital campaign to build a new headquarters, and the $400,000-plus project was built in 1996. The facility expansion also allowed the agency to increase activities, meetings and classes — plus employees.

A dozen programs are run from this grassroots social service agency.

United Neighbors grew out of Central & Western Neighborhood Development
Corporation, which started in 1973. Central & Western served as a neighborhood
center with youth activities and general assistance programs. Initially UNI’s
programs were fully funded by United Way . The earliest programs were
informational based and centered on Referral/Advocacy and Neighborhood
Organizing. It wasn’t long before UNI began to offer additional services and
programs to the community. As a result, the organization saw an increase in
the number of participants and clients served. By the mid-1980s, UNI had
added youth programs, including an award-winning drama troupe for teens,
the Summer Parks program and the Clean Team. A myriad of other projects
and programs followed. By the late 1980s, UNI was offering housing rehab
and down payment assistance programs. Funding expanded to include
CDBG, RDA, Bechtel Trusts and other sources. United Neighbors, Inc was born
from neighborhood action and a fervent desire to revitalize Davenport's
older neighborhoods. All the while, UNI has maintained its original structure and
purpose. It is neighborhood-controlled through a mainly elected board of
directors, and it serves the primarily low-and moderate-income residents of
Davenport.

People Serving People
United Neighbors, Inc. is an accessible community resource center serving
individuals, families and entire neighborhoods. The organization strives to
assist those in need and help them to better sustain their quality of life.
